The agony is enormous: to think about a mother who dies away from her children, without being able to greet them for the last time, it’s very painful. The right to close with life, saying goodbye to those we love, pigeonholing all pending things, is something that only death should be able to deny. Instead, for Lais, a 47-year-old teacher from Frosinonethe decision was made by men.

Her ex-husband, especially. An Apulian doctor whom she had reported for mistreatment but to whom she then, when she discovered she had a pancreatic cancerhad had to entrust the twelve-year-old son, keeping her eldest daughter with her, who helped her during her treatment. A temporary thing, Lais hoped, also because the court ruled that the boy’s father should take him to visit his mother once a month. But that was not the case, and Lais died without embracing her child again.

A mother who wanted to embrace her son for the last time», reads the Association’s Facebook page in farewell post to Lais, whose last wishes are also reported: «I would like I. to stay with me because this is his wish and it must be respected, and I would also like XXXX XXXXXX to stay with me, because it is his wish, even if I am now having difficulties; also because I haven’t seen my son for more than a year».

The complaint is against that justice that has not acted with sufficient speed to guarantee Lais the right to see her son, even only once a month established by the judges. It was in fact din January 2022 that the boy did not return to his mother: since, despite the request for exclusive custody to his mother, Lais had brought her son back to his father, knowing that the tumor would have taken away her time, resources and strength to take care of him.

But, despite the already dramatic situation, Lais’s ex-husband hadn’t taken his son to his mother anymore, so much so that she had been forced to act legally, presenting an instance to request any action. And even Parliament had dealt with the matter, with the deputy Cecilia Guerra who had presented a question obtaining in response from the ministry that “the visitation regime between mother and child has been regulated in order to guarantee the child’s best interest in maintaining meaningful relationships with both parents». But the time to do justice, or even just to have pity on a dying mother separated from her son, her life did not grant him, and now, on the other side, remains a young boy to whom his father will have to explain why.
