A Turkish court announced today that it is holding the mayor of Constantinople Ekrem Imamoglu in the face of trial for corruption allegations, in a move that may escalate the demonstrations, the largest in the country against the government of President Tayyip Erdogan. Imamoglou also faced allegations of terrorism. “Although there is a strong suspicion that it has helped an armed terrorist organization, as it has already been decided that it will be arrested for financial crimes, (its arrest) is not necessary at this stage,” the court said.
