Zach Stroup no longer had the strength to continue fighting, as the cancer was attacking his body for the second time. The situation was getting more and more complicated, so, as a last will, he wanted to marry his girlfriend Madison.
But being newly married gave him new strength and he decided that he would continue fighting for his now wife. After going through a bone marrow transplant and overcoming various obstacles, the cancer finally went into remission.
Madison and Zach had a normal life, he owned an insurance agency and she was a hairstylist, they met in high school but started dating a few years later. During a vacation, Zach began to feel unwell, his joints ached, he felt tired, and he had gastrointestinal problems.
A couple of months later, he was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease and prescribed medication for this problem. However, he never saw any improvement, on the contrary, he kept getting worse and worse, as now he presented fever every night, night sweats and began to lose weight at an alarming rate.
The devastating diagnosis was non-Hodgkin lymphoma, a form of blood cancer that begins in lymphocytes. His cancer was stage four, so she quickly underwent intense chemotherapy. After more than a year, the cancer went into remission. The couple began planning their wedding, they were happy to have beaten the disease, but within a couple of months, Zach began to feel bad again.
After different studies, the doctors discovered that the cancer had returned and found a tumor in Zach’s thoracic spine, for which he had to undergo surgery. Once again, complicated treatments began, but the cancer spread to the 26-year-old’s brain. After facing other complications, Zach was exhausted and was starting to give up.
In a kind of last wish, Zach and Madison moved up their hospital wedding, setting everything up in 48 hours. The event was super emotional, with the Stroups getting married in the hallway of the oncology floor at Presbyterian/St. Luke’s Medical Center in Denver, United States, on April 15, 2022. Some hospital staff accompanied them as guests. The wedding gave Zach hope and the desire to move on.
Health issues continued, but Zach was determined to fight. Two months after his wedding, he was finally able to receive a bone marrow transplant. Although other problems arose, miraculously, on July 6, 2022, he was released from the hospital. Now, they just want to be able to enjoy the simple things in life and hope that their story will inspire others to never give up in the face of adversity.
