He threw eggs at King Charles, student Patrick Thelwell was guilty

Patrick Thelwell he showed up in the classroom smiling and with an ironic billboard on which an egg was drawn. An attitude that perhaps did not help him given that he was found guilty of threatening behavior for launching, last November, at least five eggs against King Charles III and Queen Camilla visiting York, Northern England.

He had not limited himself to throwing eggs, which also narrowly missed King Charles and his wife engaged in greeting the crowd during a demonstration for the inauguration of a statue dedicated to Elizabeth II. On November 9, 2022 he had also railed against the royal couple saying the Crown leads a country built on the blood of slavery. He was immediately identified and arrested. “I threw the eggs because that’s what they deserve. It is the only justice that the victims of colonialism will ever be able to obtain »he said at the time of his arrest and he would also have called the monarch a paedophile. Even before the hearing he joined activists challenging the institution of the monarchy.

There York Court ruled that Thelwell, a 23-year-old student, was guilty of violating public order by using threatening words and behavior. The defendant pleaded not guilty saying he used a form of protest with a low level of violence lawfully because self-defense against “violence carried out by the British state”.

No one has invoked lese majeste as would have happened in the past. Thelwell was in community services for 12 months with 100 hours of unpaid work. He also has to pay £600 in court and other additional costs.
