He treated tumors with ultrasound and radiofrequencies: doctor sentenced to life imprisonment

Dr. Alba Veronica Puddu, aged 52, from Tertenia, in Ogliastra, was sentenced to life imprisonment with daytime isolation, who was on trial for treating cancer patients with alternative therapies – ultrasound, radiofrequency and blood revitalizations – which would have reduced the life expectancy of the sick and hastened their death.

The sentence of the Court of Assizes of Cagliari, presided over by Tiziana Marogna, is by far more onerous than the one requested by prosecutor Giovanna Morra (24 years and two months in prison): in the first instance, Dr. Alba Veronica Puddu is been found guilty of orvoluntary homicide, circumvention of incapable and fraud.

The family members of three deceased patients – Davide Spanu, Franco Garau and Fiorenzo Fiorini, who had suspended traditional therapies to follow the doctor’s instructions, had filed a civil action.

The investigations had started after a service from the show “Le Iene” of 19 November 2017, which reported the cases of cancer patients who had stopped being treated according to traditional protocols to follow the therapeutic schemes of Alba Veronica Puddu. In May 2018 the investigating judge Francesco Alterio had banned from the exercise of the medical profession the doctorwhich had also been subjected to disciplinary proceedings by the Nuoro medical association.

In the courtroom, the defendant defended herself by stating: “I have never forbade or discouraged my patients from following traditional therapies such as radiotherapy and chemotherapy. Everything they did was everyone’s free choice.”

According to her lawyer, Michele Zuddas, who defends her together with her colleague Nicola Oggiano, «the severity of the sentence, which even exceeds that requested by the prosecutor, caught everyone unprepared. In our opinion, in fact, there is no irrefutable proof that supports the accusation of the death of Fiorenzo Fiorini (the only one of the three patients for whom the charge of voluntary homicide has remained standing, ed.) due to Dr. Puddu’s treatments. We will wait for the reasons that led to the conviction to be filed before appealing».
