He was arrested on suspicion of planning the attack on the Catholic church in January in Istanbul

Turkish authorities have arrested an Islamic State gunman believed to have been involved in planning an attack on the Italian Catholic Church of Santa Maria in Istanbul earlier this year, Turkish intelligence said today. According to the MIT, the suspect, identified as Viskan Soltamatov, is believed to be the central figure behind the attack on January 28, 2024. He was arrested by the MIT in cooperation with the police during their joint operation in Istanbul, the agency said. The MIT also adds that this person is believed to have supplied the weapon used in the attack. A Turkish citizen was killed by two Islamic State gunmen in this attack. The attack on the church was orchestrated by armed members of the organization “IS-K” (Islamic State of Khorasan Province), an ISIS faction operating in Afghanistan. In April, Turkey arrested 48 people believed to be connected to that attack.
