A few days ago US Senator Jimmy Gomez participated in the vote for the presidential election in House of Representatives. His wife, his mom, his brothers, their wives and his nieces and nephews were all there to see him sworn in for a fourth term. With him – literally on top of him in a baby carrier – was his only 4-month-old son, Hodge.
This move was not intended to “make History” as the senator told Today, but to show that men should and can take their share of responsibility in raising a family.
Photos of Gomez with his baby were released on social media, which quickly went viral.
“His feed is at 7am, four hours later at 11am, then again at 3pm and then at 7pm. It’s a mobile alarm clock. At three o’clock he starts to get restless and awkward and that’s when you have to find a way to keep him occupied. When the 3.5 hours pass he gets really upset,” he said.
Armed with several diapers, baby wipes, bottles and his favorite baby carrier Gomez knows that something can always go wrong. “The first feeding of 10:45 started at 11:00 and lasted half an hour longer. Then we had an “explosion” in his diaper and I had to change him. Luckily there is a men’s restroom across the street from my office that has a diaper changing area, a recent addition. He was probably the first baby to be changed there,” he pointed out.

Gomez was scheduled to be at the House at 11:30 am. At 11:55 he had just finished changing his diaper. “I was able to take him to the podium with me when the voting began. For me it was a special day as a father and an AmericanGomez emphasized.

When he went to vote he said, “On behalf of my son Hodge and all the working families who need a refundable child tax credit, I’m voting for Hakeem Jeffries,” he said with the baby in the carrier to applause.
“I did it because he’s my son and I’m proud. I hope I won’t be the last MP to have his baby on the floor. When you are a parent it is about succeeding and not thinking about what is the role of the man and the woman. Our culture is changing and evolving,” he said.
