He won $37 million in the lottery but lost the people he loved: “I saw the true face of those around me”

It is not rare that after a great happy event, a misfortune follows. His story Randy Rush from Canada, proves that happiness is more important than earning a lot of money.

He confided the story of his life in a letter to insider.comwhere he described how he lost the people he loved when he won 37 million dollars in the lottery of the city of Alberta Canada.

It all started when Russ had gone to the grocery store around the corner from his house to buy some cat food. There, he saw one last ticket in the stack of lottery tickets and decided to buy it. It was to be the moment that would change his life, once and for all.

The moment he saw the money coming, resigned from his job as a salesman in a large international company. Invest part of the money to charity, real estate and hedge funds. Furthermore, decided to leave Alberta.

Rush refers to Alberta as a small town, so some people were knocking on his door and demanding money, including his neighbor. So he didn’t want to be there and face the pressures of his laps.

“The Judas experience” that destroyed him psychologically

“Having that kind of money shows what people are really made of. I lost a friendship of 43 years because of it. My mother demanded half of my earnings and never spoke to me again because I didn’t give them to her. It was a little traumatic at the time, but now I’m over it,” he said in his confessional. “But worst of all was my experience with my best friend, whom I knew from school».

His friend Russ’ son suggested one investment opportunity, to a company it said would be the next Facebook. At the time it seemed like the perfect opportunity as, as he reported, “I wanted to help a friend and invest my money».

But not all people are so innocent. Over time, it turned out that the company, in which Rush had invested 3.4 million, was surrounded by lies. The money he had put in was gone. In fact, they were taken by his best friend and his wife, who bought luxury cars and a property in California.

This experience was very heartbreaking for Russ, especially because it involved someone he cared about deeply. “After a months-long battle in Alberta and Arizona courts, everything worked out in my favor and I finally got my money back. But again, it took me ages to get over it. Now that’s in the past and I’ve learned my lesson. I call it “the experience of Judas“”.

“Winning the lottery changed my life for the better, but I think that’s because it happened at the right time in my life. However, it showed me the real face of the people around me. If there are cracks in any relationship, money will open them,” he says.

“I still buy lottery tickets today. They say that the chances of winning a second time are extremely high».
