Head of Baikal Electronics: Russia has enough of its own processors for the needs of the country

General Director of Baikal Electronics Andrei Evdokimov said in an interview with Izvestia that Russia can already independently satisfy the basic needs for processors if there is a risk of US sanctions on the supply of foreign components. He believes that in the future, Russia may become one of the leaders in the electronics industry.

At the moment in Russia, it is possible to manufacture processors using the 90 nm process technology, but Evdokimov does not believe that it is necessary to strive for the production of processors using 7- and 5-nm process technology. In fact, even 65nm, 90nm, and 180nm chips are now widely used in automotive systems, IoT devices, and home appliances. Their advantage lies in smooth production and the absence of defects.

The Baikal-M processor, which is currently one of the key products, is designed for 28nm production, which is ordered from the Taiwanese company TSMC. The head of Baikal Electronics believes that in the future Russia may have its own factory and does not see anything wrong with using used equipment.

Evdokimov also noted that in the near future there will be servers and laptops at Baikals, but the company pays most attention to its most important project – the server 48-core processor Baikal-S. Five Russian companies are currently developing devices based on this processor. In addition, the company is also working on Baikal-M Lite, a simplified and cheaper version of Baikal-M. The release of this processor is scheduled for 2022. As for the consumer market, Baikal Electronics is not yet considering it, but everything may change after the release of the next generation of domestic processors.
