Health estimates damage to at least 22% of population care units in Petrópolis

The Minister of Health, Marcelo Queiroga, went to Petrópolis this Thursday (17) as part of the task force that the federal government set up to help the municipality, which was hit by heavy rains on Tuesday (15).

This Friday, President Jair Bolsonaro and other ministers, such as Rogério Marinho, of Regional Development, are scheduled to go. According to the Ministry of Health, there was damage to 22.7% of the health structures in the municipality. The latest report from the National and Local Health Surveillance, released this Wednesday, points to the damage of 13 Basic Health Units (UBS) and an Emergency Care Unit.

About 500 kg of medicines and supplies were sent to Petrópolis. There is concern about the proliferation of diseases caused by contact with dirty water and damage to sewage and sanitation networks, such as leptospirosis and hepatitis.

The federal government has committed to the release of funds. Contrary to the itinerary he completed in São Paulo, where he was also due to the rain and did not meet João Doria, Bolsonaro will be received by the governor of Rio de Janeiro. THE CNNClaudio Castro, who is a political ally of the Bolsonaro government, stated that it has not yet been possible to calculate the costs of rebuilding Petrópolis.

“Right now, it is difficult to calculate how much it will cost to rebuild the city. It hasn’t even been 48 hours since the incident. Now we are engaged in the work of cleaning up the city and helping the people. Nobody stopped to budget things. This morning, the state comes in to clean the streets, clean the historic center, not let the mud dry or it will start to turn to dust”, explained Castro to the CNN.

The state government sent 190 machines to help the municipality in clearing roads and cleaning the city. It is estimated that the rains have impacted 26 points in the city, which increases the difficulty of reconstruction. “It was not a single or a few areas. There are overturned cars, construction debris, trees, all this makes it much more difficult to think about the resumption of the city”, pointed out the governor.
