The Ministry of Health launched, this Thursday (20), the national campaign to combat the mosquito Aedes aegyptiwhich transmits diseases such as dengue, Zika and chikungunya.
In 2022, the number of dengue cases in Brazil rose by almost 185% between January and the beginning of October, compared to the same period last year. In 2021, 478,500 cases were recorded, a number that rose to 1.3 million this year. In addition, the year had 909 confirmed deaths from the disease.
In relation to chikungunya, until October, 168,900 cases had been reported. When compared to the same period in 2021, there was a growth of 86.9% in the rates of the disease. Zika, on the other hand, indicated an increase of 92.6% in 2022, but there were no deaths from the virus.
The campaign, with the theme “Every day is the day to fight the mosquito” seeks to raise awareness of the importance of daily prevention of the disease. “Prevention is the best way to fight the disease,” the ministry said. “Any place of standing water must be eliminated, because that is where the transmitting mosquito lays its eggs”, he concluded.
According to the Minister of Health, Marcelo Queiroga, the campaign seeks to mobilize citizens to participate in the fight.
“We can’t do this alone. If there is no cooperation from society, every year we will have cases and cases of dengue”, she said, during a press conference.
Socorro Gross, representative of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) in Brazil, said that this campaign represents a “daily struggle” of health agencies in the fight against the mosquito.
“The campaign is very relevant, because the construction of health has to be a joint construction”, he said.
Through the campaign, which will be linked on television, radio and internet, the folder will inform the population about the main outbreaks of mosquito proliferation (see below ).
