Health Minister Nísia Trindade ruled out the possibility of a Mpox pandemic in Brazil at this time. The statement was made in interview with Live CNN this Wednesday (21).
The minister’s statement came after questioning from the policy analyst at CNN Basília Rodrigues, who asked the minister if Mpox could be compared to Covid-19.
“This is a warning and it is very important to emphasize this, but it is not a situation that we should be alarmed about, in the sense of a pandemic,” the minister considered.
Emergency Center for Travelers
The minister stated that the plan to implement an emergency center for travelers is in the development phase. The project is an action by the Ministry of Health itself in partnership with the National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa), reinforcing that the agency is responsible for surveillance, and that at this time communication in ports and airports has been focused on raising awareness of the symptoms of Mpox.
Nísia points out that security measures are not limited to Brazilians arriving from countries with high rates of disease cases.
“Not only in relation to people coming from Africa. Just remember that there has already been a case in Sweden, which involved a traveler. At this time, the alert must be general.”, he reinforces.
Brazil’s health chief said that “at this time” any type of campaign advising Brazilians to avoid Central African countries is not being recommended. She reinforced Brazil’s role in solidarity at this time.
“We are studying missions together with the WHO to support these populations in outbreak situations,” the minister said.
National vaccine
According to Minister Nísia Trindade, Brazil has already begun developing a vaccine for Mpox. The project is a partnership between the ministry and the Institute of Science and Technology of the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG).
However, two factors stand out as worrying elements. The first is the stage of the vaccine, which according to her is in a “very preliminary phase”, in addition to the fact that the vaccine in process does not meet the current variants due to “lack of development time” of the immunizers.
One plan considered essential is the formation of a “vaccine library,” according to the minister. At this time, however, the minister said that “there is no recommendation for mass vaccination.” Watch the video above .
