Data from a survey by the Brazilian Medical Association (AMB) showed that 87.3% of health professionals were affected by Covid-19 in the last two months.
The president of AMB, César Eduardo Fernandes, in an interview with CNNsaid the number “is not a surprise” given the scenario reported by doctors.
“We have never had such explosive numbers, with such rapid transmission, there are almost 300,000 cases per day,” he said.
César also said that, even if the teams were fully constituted, without loss of professionals, “they would already be insufficient for the enormous demand.”
He evaluated that the “situation of health professionals is chaotic”: “If a doctor treated 20 patients, today, he sees 60 or more, with less possibility of recommended rest, meal time, doctors are physically and emotionally exhausted, and patients are being harmed by the wait.”
The solution, according to César, is not simple: “To be able to equate, we would have to reduce the number of cases, and on the other hand, rebuild health teams, this is difficult because it is not an isolated unit, as a whole they are compromised, there is no way to relocate.”
The president of AMB highlights that it is essential that the population continues to seek vaccination, wear masks, avoid agglomerations and isolate themselves if they have contact with positive cases of Covid-19.
