Argentina is facing a historic heat wave, with temperatures exceeding 40ºC. In addition, hundreds of thousands of people were left without electricity after failures in the electrical network in the capital region of Buenos Aires.
Dry and hot weather, driven by the natural phenomenon La Niña, is already affecting the plantations. This made Argentina, for a few hours, the hottest place on the planet, surpassing parts of Australia, which cooled overnight.
“What we are going through is a heat wave of extraordinary characteristics, of extreme temperature values, which, even when analyzed at the end, can reach some historical temperature records in Argentina, as well as heat persistence”, analyzes meteorologist Lucas Berengua.
The situation made some Argentines think about climate change and the possibility of more extreme temperatures. In recent years, the country has seen a considerable increase in the number of wildfires. The Paraná River, the main watercourse that forms the La Plata Basin, reached its lowest level in the last 80 years.
Rio Grande do Sul and Uruguay were also hit by the heat wave. According to MetSul Meteorologia, the highest temperatures in the Brazilian state should be recorded in the West region. The Uruguaiana city area could see an escalation of heat with highs of 41ºC and 42ºC in the coming days.
“In Porto Alegre and the region, the heat will be higher at the end of the week and next weekend with marks around or above 40ºC”, points out MetSul.
