Due to the strong heat wave that reaches the Rio Grande do Sul the government canceled the start of classes in the 2,320 state schools, which were expected to start on Monday (10).
The measure is the result of a determination of justice that aims to reschedule the academic calendar, which can now start on the 17th of this month.
The injunction, issued by the court on Sunday (9), meets a request from the Center of State Teachers of Rio Grande do Sul (CPERS), which argued that weather forecasts point to extreme heat days in the gaucho state during the week.
“Resume classes in the midst of an extreme climate event, with temperatures that can exceed 40 ° C and 50 ° C thermal sensation in various regions of the state, as well as classrooms and other school environments without the necessary structure to face such Situation is to endanger the lives of teachers, staff and students, ”said the CPERS petition.
Thus, in view of the action raised by the union and the forecast of extreme heat, the judge Lúcia de Fátima Cerveira determined the suspension of the beginning of classes, considering that the lack of conditions of several gaucho teaching units “is stark”, given the lack of ventilation equipment and drinking fountains.
In the decision, Lucia pointed out that “countless children and adolescents, as well as teachers and other employees, need to move on foot, or by public transport, amidst high temperatures as planned.”
The judge also stressed that it is not unaware of the importance of complying with the school calendar already planned. However, he pointed out that the measure of suspension of the resumption of classes “is necessary to ensure the well-being of students and collaborators.”
In a statement, the government of Rio Grande do Sul stated that the State Attorney General’s Office (PGE-RS) studies the injunction and prepares the appeal on Sunday.
Warning of “great danger”
Last Wednesday (5), the National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet) issued a warning of “great danger” for the wave of heat in part of the state of Rio Grande do Sul. According to the institute, this warning remains active until the night of Monday (10).
According to Climatempo, the heat wave that operates in the south of the country should last until next Wednesday (12), during which temperatures above 40 ° C can be observed in various areas of Rio Grande do Sul.
The meteorology agency also points out that there is a possibility that the record of 43.8 ° C – registered on the last day 4 of this month in the municipality of Quaraí (RS) – be overcome.
