Heatwave hits Europe, Wales records hottest day on record

An extreme heat wave of heat is hitting Europe and causing forest fires in some countries like France, Spain and Portugal. On Monday (18), Wales recorded its hottest day in history, with temperatures reaching 35.3C in Gogerddan, near Aberystwyth, the UK Met Office said.

In a tweet, the Met Office said the previous record was 35.2C recorded at Hawarden Bridge, Flintshire, on August 2, 1990.

On Friday, the Met Office issued its first “red” warning for extreme heat for Monday and Tuesday, with temperatures predicted to reach 40 degrees Celsius in some parts of the country.

The UK is currently experiencing travel disruptions due to unusually high temperatures.

This week, 360 people died as a result of high temperatures in Spain, according to data released by the Instituto de Salud Carlos III.

Estimates provided by the Ministry of Health earlier were that 237 people had died.
