This Wednesday morning (25) there was damage caused by rain in Rio Grande do Sul. According to the state’s Civil Defense, the western, southern, central, metropolitan regions and part of the coast of Rio Grande do Sul are facing storms with moderate to heavy rain, electrical discharges, strong wind gusts and hail.
The tendency is that in the next few hours these instabilities will continue to act in these regions and move in an easterly direction – that is, closer to the coast of Rio Grande do Sul.
The region most affected so far is the south of the state. In Piratini, Arambaré and Pinheiro Machado, municipal civil defenses reported hail. In Camaquã, strong winds caused roofs to be torn off in the city, as well as in Canguçu. Between the cities of Camaquã and Arambaré there are roadblocks due to fallen trees on the road.
According to the National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet), the cities that recorded the most rain in the last few hours were Dom Pedrito (29.2 mm), Bagé (25.2 mm) and Canguçu (20.4 mm), all in the southern region. The biggest gusts of wind recorded since Tuesday night (24) occurred in Porto Alegre (89 km/h); Dom Pedrito (70 km/h) and Caçapava do Sul (68 km/h).
According to the Rio Grande do Sul government’s Situation Room, the cold front will advance to areas not yet affected in the state tonight, increasing the risk of storms. Wind gusts could reach up to 90 km/h.
On Thursday (26), heavy rain is expected to fall over the northern half of Rio Grande do Sul and the volume of rain could reach up to 125 mm/day.
According to the state government, isolated storms may bring hail and wind gusts of up to 80 km/h. These heavy rains may also raise the level of the state’s rivers, potentially reaching flood levels, affecting riverside areas and causing roadblocks and persistent flooding in urban areas.
