Heavy rains are forecast in Petrópolis and the mountain region of RJ in the coming days

After the heavy rain that hit the mountainous region of Rio this Tuesday (15), especially the city of Petrópolis, the forecast for the next few days is not good. According to Climatempo, it should start to rain again from mid-Thursday (17th), extending until Friday afternoon (18th). Despite the great intensity, the forecast volume is lower than what was observed on Tuesday.

“We are talking about heavy rain, but not as voluminous as what happened this Tuesday (15). Even so, it is a scenario that raises concern because the soil is still very wet and, therefore, the maximum alert for the region is still being followed,” said Daniela Freitas, meteorologist at Climatempo.

According to information released by the National Center for Monitoring and Alerts for Natural Disasters (Cemaden), linked to the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation, this Tuesday, in just four hours, there was a volume of rain 40% greater than normal for the entire month of February. The accumulated observed in these four hours was 260mm of rain and the historical average for the whole month is 185mm.

According to Daniela Freitas, this Tuesday’s rain was associated with a cold front that is now further away. Currently, this cold front operates in areas of Espírito Santo, in the Zona da Mata of Minas Gerais and also in points in the Vale do Rio Doce.

Also according to Climatempo, the sky remains overcast, the temperature is lower and new sporadic rains with low to moderate intensity are not ruled out throughout this Wednesday (16). However, the rain forecast for today will not be heavy.

Until mid-morning this Wednesday, at least 38 deaths were recorded as a result of the heavy rains that hit the city of Petrópolis, in the mountainous region of Rio de Janeiro, on Tuesday afternoon (15). According to the city hall, 171 landslides and 207 occurrences were also recorded.

The Secretary of State for Civil Defense estimates that 35 to 50 houses were affected by the landslides, a number that could rise throughout the day, as several regions of the city have restrictions on access.
