Heavy rains cause flooding in central Spain

Strong rains caused by storm Martin flooded some parts of downtown Spain on Friday (21). In Madrid, the capital of the country, there are risks of overflowing rivers.

In Ávila, roads, fields and sports places were flooded while people tried to remove water from their homes and excavators worked on the banks of the Adaja river to remove branches and avoid further floods.

Spain’s military emergency unit was ignoring water levels around a hospital for people with disabilities after placing a wall of sand bags to prevent the water from reaching the building if the levels continued to rise.

The Spanish capital remains on alert due to the risk of overflowing the Manzanares River with the approach of a new storm in the city, authorities said.

For the morning of Friday (21), the authorities were forced to close some access roads to the M-30 and M-40 highways in northern Madrid-roads surrounding the city and are used by thousands of cars every day.

Storm Martin first hit Spain on Thursday (20) and authorities warned residents to stay away from areas where water levels are getting close to the streets.

The unusual sequence of consecutive storms has helped the country – whose usually sunny climate is a great attraction for tourists – ending a long drought, with many dams now having water released to prevent them from overflowing.

After two weeks of rain, Spanish reservoirs have 65.6% of their capacity, above an average of 10 years, with an increase of 5% last week.
