Cracks in a large dam were caused by heavy rains on the island of Maui, in Hawaii, as a result of which the authorities sounded the alarm and opened shelters for the citizens, as all those who were close to the dam and the nearby coast were forced to leave the area.
The rains resulted in cracks in the barrier Kaupakalua, in the north of the island, according to Reuters. “If the dam recedes, will cause life-threatening floods and significant damage along the entire course of the water, “the authorities warned.
The shelters opened at a community center and a school, according to Hawaiian Governor David Ige.
The state is standing by to support the County of Maui as residents and visitors downstream of the Kaupakulua Dam evacuate at this hour. Please stay out of the area until the danger has passed and continue to monitor local media for updates.
