Heavy rains should continue to hit Pernambuco until Wednesday, says meteorologist

The heavy rains that have hit the state of Pernambuco since last week – which have already left at least 84 dead – should continue until next Wednesday (1st).

In an interview with CNN Radio , Climatempo meteorologist Maria Clara Sassaki said that “very high accumulations” were recorded and that the rainfall is already historic. “And there is still a forecast of rain, the situation is extremely worrying.”

“The expectation is for rains of strong and weak intensities until at least Wednesday (1st), and any rain that comes brings a high potential for landslides, since the level of the rivers is much above normal”, he explained.

According to Maria Clara, at the moment there are “clouds heavy between Sergipe and Pernambuco, with a risk of rain in the coming hours.”

The meteorologist stressed that this time of year normally brings rain to the Northeast, in a phenomenon known as Ondas de Leste: “From May to the end of July is the wettest period.”

Maria Clara Sassaki admits that a detailed study is needed to find out if the behavior of the rains is atypical and if it is related to what level with climate change, but said that “in fact, rains with potential for risk have happened with a certain frequency”.
