Heavy rains trigger landslides, floods in southern China

Continuous rains have caused severe flooding in parts of China, footage from state television CCTV showed on Saturday (29).

Water levels in Poyang Lake, China’s largest freshwater lake, have risen above warning levels, while the Xiushan section of the Meijiang River in Chongqing is experiencing its worst flooding this year, CCTV reported.

An access road leading to a village in Jiujiang, Jiangxi province, was closed due to flooding, while a section of the national road in Chongqing had to be temporarily closed after prolonged heavy rain caused a huge landslide, with rescue efforts still ongoing.

In recent years, the increase in extreme weather events has challenged China’s emergency response capabilities, particularly when it comes to dealing with more severe floods.
