Heineken will have a new factory in MG with an investment of R$ 1.8 billion

The Heineken Group announced this Wednesday (27) that its new factory in the country will be in the city of Passos, in the state of Minas Gerais, with an initial investment of R$ 1.8 billion. The facility will have a production capacity of 500 million liters per year and potential for future expansion of this amount.

Scheduled to open by 2025, the new operation should employ 350 people, in addition to generating approximately, according to the brewery’s calculations, 11,000 indirect jobs.

Pure malt brands such as Heineken and Amstel will be produced there.

“We received contact from more than 200 interested cities who were extremely receptive and helpful in opening their doors to us. We are very happy with this recognition and would like to reinforce our thanks to all the municipalities”, comments Mauricio Giamellaro, president of the group in the country.

To Broadcast (Grupo Estado’s real-time news system), the company stated that the cities were interested in presenting good opportunities for land, in addition to favorable conditions for setting up a business of this size.

“As naturally happens in negotiations in the industry, we received state and municipal incentives so that it was possible to proceed with our expansion plan in the state”, said the company in writing, without detailing what the tax incentives were. The initial investment for the construction of the new unit in MG, in turn, comes from the company’s own resources.

Renewable energy

The new operation will be powered only by renewable energy sources, in addition to meeting the principles of water efficiency. The city of Passos is also part of the Heineken branded green energy distributed generation program.

Residents of the municipality will have access to renewable energy through a digital registration on the company’s platform.

The same goes for local bars and restaurants, which can receive up to 15% off their monthly bill. The company does not disclose how much extending the use of renewable energy to the local community costs the company.

Decision met technical criteria, says Heineken

According to Giamellaro, the installation of the company’s new factory in Minas Gerais passed by everyone’s understanding. According to the company, technical criteria guided the choice.

The company would build the new operation, at first, in the city of Pedro Leopoldo (MG). However, legal issues related to environmental issues made the company change its plans.

Still in the initial phase of the work in Pedro Leopoldo, ICMBio pointed out problems and the company had the work embargoed, in addition to receiving a fine. After legal disagreements, the company decided to keep the investment in the state, but in another municipality.

During the new selection process, the group’s corporate affairs director in Brazil, Mauro Homem, said that the company was interested in about 200 municipalities and that the choice was based on technical criteria, especially in relation to the water availability at the site.

“After the courageous decision to leave Pedro Leopoldo, due to the articulation we had, we took a decision based on technical criteria”, said Homem, at the signing ceremony of the document for the construction of the factory, together with the state government.
