Heirs of Author Who Inspired “Top Gun” Sues Paramount Over Movie Sequel

The family of the author whose article inspired the 1986 film “Top Gun,” with Tom Cruise sued Paramount Pictures on Monday for copyright infringement over the film’s sequel, “Top Gun: Maverick” .

According to the complaint filed in federal court in Los Angeles, Paramount Global did not reacquire the rights to Ehud Yonay’s 1983 “Top Guns” article with family before releasing the “derivative” sequel to the text. .

The lawsuit filed by Shosh Yonay and Yuval Yonay, who live in Israel and are, respectively, Ehud’s widow and son, seeks damages of an unspecified amount, including profits from “Top Gun: Maverick”, in addition to blocking the distribution of the movie or future sequels.

Paramount said in a statement: “These claims are made without merit, and we will vigorously defend ourselves.”

The movie “Top Gun: Maverick” is the biggest box office hit of the year, generating $291 million in North America and $548.6 million worldwide in its first 10 days of showing.

The thrilling action movie, directed by Joseph Kosinski, has received rave reviews, and has Tom Cruise reprise his role as US Navy fighter pilot Pete “Maverick” Mitchell.

The film is already Cruise’s most profitable in the United States, surpassing 2005’s “War of the Worlds”.
