Contrary to what many people think, the name was not chosen by the author as a tribute to some Helena in his life. Manoel Carlos explained the reason for his choice in the program “Tribute to Manoel Carlos” released on Globoplay in honor of his 91st birthday.
In old statements from the author transmitted by the production, he stated that he chose the name because of the mythology that surrounds it. “People are really curious to know. They say 'it was his mother, a sister, a girlfriend, a first wife'. None of that. Helena is just a name that I think is more appropriate for a character than a real person “, he said.
“Maybe because I always liked mythology. The mythological Helena is fantastic. And that whole story about Helen of Troy being a kidnapped woman, married to her kidnapper, divorced and returned to live with her husband after separating from him… All of that gave me something, a very interesting magic, that captivated me a lot ”, he explained.
According to the author, his protagonists have always been women unhappy in love, but also characters who hide a dark side, always keeping a secret from the people closest to them.
“I have always thought and continue to think that women move the world. Everything is in the woman. It's easier for me to write about women because women say things. The man does not confess that he is betrayed. A woman gathers her friends, says that her husband has a lover, and they all cry together,” she added.
