The Brazilian Air Force (FAB) intercepted a helicopter carrying approximately 240 kg of drugs, which had entered Brazilian airspace without authorization. The operation was carried out in conjunction with the Federal Police (PF) and involved two A-29 Super Tucano aircraft and an H-60 Black Hawk helicopter.
The helicopter was coming from Venezuela and was intercepted near Manaus (AM), after being identified as suspicious by the Aerospace Operations Command (COMAE) for not presenting a flight plan when entering Brazilian airspace.
During discreet tracking, one of the A-29s observed the aircraft make a forced landing in a wooded area.
Federal Police agents aboard the H-60 Black Hawk went to the location and seized 240 kg of skunk — a more potent form of marijuana with a high THC content. The helicopter pilot, however, managed to escape through the forest.
The interception is part of Operation Ostium, which is part of the Integrated Border Protection Program (PPIF), focused on combating illicit activities in Brazilian airspace through coordinated actions between the FAB and public security agencies.
Air Brigadier General João Campos Ferreira Filho, Chief of the COMAE Joint Staff, highlighted that the operation demonstrates the ability to integrate aerospace resources to combat drug trafficking in an efficient and coordinated manner.
“This action demonstrates our ability to integrate aerospace resources to combat drug trafficking and guarantee the sovereignty of airspace, especially in border regions, in cooperation with national and international bodies,” he said.
