Hellenic Cables: Undertook a contract for the supply of approximately 360 km of submarine inter-array cables

Cenergy Holdings announced today that Hellenic Cables, its cable division, has taken over from Van Oord Offshore Wind UK Ltd Procurement of approximately 360 km of 66 kV inter-array cables and related components for the Sofia Offshore Wind Farm marine wind farm in the United Kingdomone of the largest offshore wind farms in the world.

RWE Sofia Offshore Wind Farm is located on Dogger Bank in the North Sea, 195 km from the nearest northeast coast and covers an area of approximately 593 sq km. – an area approximately corresponding to the size of Corfu. The depth of the sea at the site of the wind farm is between 20m and 35m and the total amount of energy that the park is estimated to produce will be sufficient for the annual needs of almost 1.2 million households, on average, in the United Kingdom. Once commissioned, the power generated by Sofia wind turbines is expected to save more than 2.5 million tonnes of carbon emissions per year, compared to emissions from fossil fuel use in the UK.

“Hellenic Cables, as one of the largest cable producers, plays a key role in the energy transition. We are proud to support Van Oord, contributing to a green energy transition and a more sustainable planet, enhancing carbon sequestration efforts in the UK” , he commented Mr. Alexis Alexiou, CEO of Cenergy Holdings.

According to the new contract, Hellenic Cables has undertaken the design, construction, production, testing and supply of approximately 360 km of 66 kV inter-array cables with XLPE insulation together with the relevant components.

The cables will be manufactured in the vertical, state-of-the-art Hellenic Cables submarine cable production plant in Corinth, in the world-class high and high voltage submarine cable production facilities for offshore applications. Cable production is set to begin in 2022 and be completed in 2023.

RWE has contracted with Van Oord Offshore Wind UK Ltd to provide the design, supply, construction and installation of single-pile foundation systems and inter-array cables at Sofia Wind Farm.

“We are pleased to expand our partnership with Hellenic Cables and participate in Sofia, one of the largest wind farm projects in the world. Utilizing our experience and know-how demonstrated in previous projects, such as Hollandse Kust (South ), our goal is to successfully implement this project, which strengthens our leadership role in the installation and laying of submarine wind power cables, together with our investment in the specially constructed next-generation green cable laying vessel Calypso, this project highlights “Van Oord’s effort to continuously strengthen its market position,” he commented Mr. Arnoud Kuis, CEO Van Oord Offshore Wind.
