A tragedy unfolded overnight in the southern city of Kaohsiung Taiwan. Fire broke out in a building with apartments, resulting in 46 people losing their lives and 41 more being injured, the government announced today.
The fire broke out in a 40-year-old building in Kaohsiung’s Yancheng district in the early hours of the morning and was extinguished around dawn.
The Kaohsiung Fire Department said it could confirm there were 46 dead after a search of the building was completed.
Mayor Chen Chi-mai clarified that this building was partially abandoned, while in the past it housed restaurants, karaoke centers and a cinema, as broadcast by Reuters and relayed by the Athens News Agency.
The government is investigating its causes fire as well as the case that it was due to arson.
