In the afternoon of October 23, many Telegram users from Russia, Ukraine and Belarus encountered strange spam: English-language accounts with female names and avatars (presumably bots) began to write to random users with questions about which country they are from and what the weather is in their region. This was reported by members of Treshbox’s Telegram chats, including members of the open community.
All spam dialogues are conducted in English and are built approximately according to the same pattern: a female account writes a greeting and introduces herself as someone else (most often a certain Sam), and then finds out the user’s place of residence in various ways in order to find out about the weather in his region. After finding out the weather, they ask about the local situation for the prevention and control of epidemics.
For what purpose this spam is sent is unknown. There can be at least two logical explanations: either some foreign analytical company thus arranges a sociological survey (about the situation with the pandemic), or someone is testing some kind of neural network (like GPT-3, about which there is a separate article on Treshbox) on real users. However, these are only the assumptions of the author of this news.
