Hemorio records a 15% drop in the number of daily blood donations

Rio de Janeiro’s state blood bank, Hemorio, recorded a 15% reduction in the number of daily blood donations.

On average, the unit usually receives 300 donors per day, and in total, it helps to supply more than one hundred health units across the state.

“We have noticed a constant drop in the number of blood donations at our collection points. This concerns us, mainly, due to the high demand for blood that we have in hospitals and health units. We need to increase the average number of daily donations and reinforce the importance that donating blood has in the lives of those who need it most”, said Luiz Amorim, director of Hemorio.

Last month, there was a 5% decrease in the number of donations, which led Hemorio to create the “Influ do Bem” campaign, inspired by the Paris Olympics. The initiative managed to collect 1,732 bags of blood.

In addition to Hemorio, the state has another 27 blood centers: 12 more collection points in the capital and the others located in the municipalities of Niterói, São Gonçalo, Rio Bonito, Angra dos Reis, Duque de Caxias, Resende, Barra Mansa, Volta Redonda , Vassouras, Nova Friburgo, Teresópolis, Cabo Frio, Itaperuna, Campos and Macaé.

Last year, Hemorio collected 85,360 bags of blood. So far this year, the Institute has received 65 thousand donations.
