Henrique Meirelles defends cutting expenses to avoid future problems

Former Finance Minister Henrique Meirelles said the new federal government will need to cut public spending to avoid fiscal problems in the future. The economist participated in the 27th Annual Meeting of the Chemical Industry this Monday (12).

According to Meirelles, a new administrative reform would compensate for the expansion of expenses with the PEC of the Estoril.

The former minister points out, however, that the tax reform cannot be used as a counterbalance in the National Congress for progress on the Expenditure Ceiling. “It would be an extremely wrong solution to offset the increase in expenses with tax increases”, he pondered.

New Minister of Finance

Henrique Meirelles stated that former São Paulo mayor Fernando Haddad is a “good name” for the Ministry of Finance. For Meirelles, the PT party needs to make quality appointments and give autonomy to the economic team to have good management.

“It is important that he choose secretaries with a good level, knowledge, experience. This has worked more than once. Provided that the choices are well made and that in fact these secretaries have autonomy”, said the former minister.
