The first case of acute hepatitis in a two-year-old boy was recorded in Panama, a few days later the bell of the World Health Organization for 230 possible cases in 20 countries.
Lourdes Moreno, chief epidemiologist at the Ministry of Health, explained that the case confirmed by a specialized institute and clarified that the child, from the province of East Panamais out of dangerafter his hospitalization.
“After this case, the epidemiological surveillance increased and a signal was transmitted to all the health structures of the Social Insurance Institution, the Ministry of Health, the private hospitals and the clinics,” Moreno said in a press release.
The official called the parents of small children to be vigilant for symptoms of the disease (high fever, yellowing of the skin, algae in the abdomen). The virus that causes the disease is transmitted by droplets, Moreno noted.
The WHO announced in late April that at least one child had succumbed to acute hepatitis from an unknown cause.
