Saturday 6 May, on the occasion of theCoronation Of King Charles III, Westminster Abbey will be crowded with royals from all European houses, heads of state, aristocrats, dignitaries and representatives of all religions. Also subjectshowever, they will be able to secure an invitation. Provided they demonstrate with irrefutable evidence that they possess an essential requirement: the existence of an ancestor in the family who played any part in past Coronations. There is not much time to send the request to Buckingham Palace: the deadline expires on February 3rd. But who will be able to prove, family tree in hand, that they have an ancestor who played a certain role during a Coronation in British history, can play the same role during the coronation of Charles III.
It is a tradition that has been going on since centuries. And that the new ruler wanted to keep. Buckingham Palace in recent days announced the establishment of Coronation Claims Office: a special office, located in the government buildings, which will have the same function as the Court of Claims created in 1953 for the coronation of the Queen Elizabeth. In the coming weeks, in the new office, a team of assistants to Charles III, with the help of experts in religious and royal ceremonies, will go through each invitation request before sending the coveted royal-printed envelopes. And the chosen ones will then be called to the court for the general rehearsals.
Queen Elizabeth II, in 1953, had gone big by inviting more than 8 thousand people at his coronation. The husband of Camilla Parker Bowles instead will have «only» 3 thousand guests. But among them, once again, there will also be very lucky “plebeians”. Mr Francis Dymoke – a farmer 67-year-old who lives in Lincolnshire – he told the Telegraph hoping to be on the list. The requirements are not really lacking: his family has played a part in British coronations since as far back as 1066, when the crown rested on the head of William the Conqueror. At the coronation of Queen Elizabeth, the Dymokes even received a special mention: «When my father marched at the coronation of Queen Elizabeth carrying the royal standard, journalist Richard Dimbleby said: “This is Captain John Dymoke, whose family it has carried the banner for almost 1,000 years”». If Mr Francis is invited by Charles III, he will become the 34th Dymoke to boast of having witnessed the coronation of an English king or queen.
