A boy from Zaporizhzhia, in southeastern Ukraine, was hailed “a hero of the night” by Slovak authorities after they said he crossed the border from Ukraine into Slovakia on his own.
The 11-year-old boy carried a backpack, a plastic bag and a passport, and had a phone number written on his hand, according to the Slovak Ministry of Interior.
“He came alone because his parents had to stay in Ukraine. Volunteers took care of him, took him to a warm place and gave him food and drink,” the ministry said.
The statement, posted on the ministry’s Facebook page on Saturday, said that thanks to information written on the boy’s hand and on a folded piece of paper in his passport, border officials were able to contact the boy’s relatives in Slovakia, who could then look for him.
“He won everyone over with his smile, fearlessness and determination worthy of a true hero,” the statement read. It is unclear why the boy was unattended.
CNN could not independently verify this individual case, but more than 1.5 million refugees have already left Ukraine since February 24, according to the UN on March 3. Of all refugees who fled, most of them crossed into Poland. Others went to countries like Hungary, Slovakia, Moldova and Romania.
