The head of Hezbollah, an armed group in Lebanon, said this Wednesday (3) that the murder of the deputy leader of Hamas in Beirut is a “great and dangerous crime about which we cannot remain silent”.
In a televised speech, Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah offered condolences to Hamas for what he called the “blatant Israeli aggression” on Tuesday night (2), which killed Saleh al-Arouri.
According to analysts, the attack on the suburb of Dahiyeh, south of Beirut, could be a message from Israel to Hezbollah that even its main stronghold could be hit.
It was the first attack to hit Lebanon's capital after almost three months of almost daily fire between the Israeli military and Hezbollah, but restricted to the border region.
The armed group fired rockets across the border on October 8 in support of Hamas, which had carried out a deadly attack in southern Israel the day before, triggering a fierce Israeli bombing campaign against the Gaza Strip.
Nasrallah noted that Hezbollah's “swift” action on October 8 and cross-border bombing since then prevented a broader Israeli campaign against Lebanon.
“Unlimited response” if war expands
Nasrallah also warned on Wednesday that if Israel wages war with Lebanon, the response will be “unlimited”
“A war with us will be extremely costly. It would then be in Lebanon’s interest to go to war until the end,” he added.
He promised that “there will be no ceiling” and “no rules” in his group’s combat if Israel decides to launch a war in Lebanon.
