Hezbollah commander survived Israeli attack in Beirut, source says

Fu’ad Shukr, a senior Hezbollah commander, survived the Israeli strike that targeted him in the southern suburbs of Beirut, a Lebanese government official told CNN.

An Israeli official confirmed to CNN that the target of the offensive was Shukr.

Shukr is a senior adviser to Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah, according to a U.S. government website. He serves in the Iran-backed group’s highest military rank.

$5 million reward

The US State Department is offering a $5 million reward for information about the attacked commander.

Shukr “played a central role in the October 23, 1983 bombing of the U.S. Marine Corps Barracks in Beirut that killed 241 U.S. service members and wounded 128 others,” they said.

In September 2019, the State Department designated him a “Specially Designated Global Terrorist pursuant to Executive Order 13224,” more than four years after the U.S. Treasury Department imposed sanctions on Shukr and two other Hezbollah leaders.
