Lebanese group head Hezbollah said on Sunday (2) that Hassan Nasrallah will be buried on February 23, almost five months after being killed in an Israeli air strike in the suburbs of southern Beirut.
Nasrallah, who has been Hezbollah secretary-general for more than 30 years, was killed on September 27, when Israel intensified his air attacks against Hezbollah targets, just before Israeli troops began terrestrial raids in southern Lebanon.
His successor, Naim Qasm, said in a televised speech on Sunday that Nasrallah was killed “in a moment of difficulties,” which forced the group to perform a temporary burial according to religious tradition.
Qasmoum stated that the group has now decided to perform “a large funeral procession with a large public presence” to Nasrallah and Hashem Safieddine, another high Hezbollah employee who killed in an Israeli attack almost a week after Nasrallah. During the speech, he also confirmed for the first time that Safieddine was elected Nasrallah successor, but was killed before the public announcement. He said Safieddine will also be buried with the title of Secretary General.
The deaths of Nasrallah and Safieddine, as well as many of the group’s main military commanders, caused a disorder in Hezbollah. The group announced on October 29 to want, the group’s deputy leader, was elected as his new boss.
A ceasefire agreed at the end of November ended the hostilities between Hezbollah and Israel, setting a 60-day deadline for the removal of the southern Israeli troops, the removal of the area Hezbollah from the area and the sending of the Lebanese troops for the region.
This deadline was extended last month until February 18. Israel has continued to carry out some air strikes in parts of Lebanon, accusing Hezbollah of violating the terms of ceasefire.
Hezbollah states that Israel is responsible for violations and that the Lebanese state and foreign sponsors of the agreement – the US and France – should prevent Israel’s violations. However, the group did not threaten to resume the fighting.
