Hezbollah is ready to discuss weapons if Israel withdraws from Lebanon

While the appeals for Lebanon’s Hezbollah to disarm gain strength, a senior authority told Reuters that the group is ready to negotiate with the Lebanese president about his weapons if Israel agrees to withdraw from southern Lebanon and interrupt his attacks.

President Joseph Aoun, supported by the United States, who promised to take office in January, to establish a state monopoly on arms control, intends to start conversations with Hezbollah about his arsenal soon, three lebanese political sources said.

The discussion about disarmament has intensified since the balance of power was shaken by last year’s war with Israel and the dismissal of Hezbollah’s Syrian ally, former President Bashar al-Assad.

Hezbollah was severely weakened from the 2024 conflict with Israel, when its main leaders and thousands of combatants were killed and much of their rocket arsenal was destroyed.

Hezbollah’s senior authority said the group was ready to discuss their weapons in the context of a national defense strategy, but this depended on Israel’s withdrawal from their five -point troops in southern Lebanon.

“Hezbollah is ready to discuss the question of their weapons if Israel withdraws from the five points and interrupting their aggression against the Lebanese,” the authority told Reuters.

Hezbollah’s position on possible discussions about his weapons had not yet been reported. The sources spoke on condition of anonymity due to political sensitivities.

Hezbollah’s media office did not immediately respond to a comment. The presidency refused to comment.

Israel, who sent land troops to the south of Lebanon during the war, withdrew largely but decided in February not to leave the five positions. The country said it intended to deliver them to Lebanese troops when it was sure the security situation allowed it.

Despite a ceasefire since November, Israeli air strikes have maintained the pressure on the group, while Washington demanded that Hezbollah disarms and prepares for negotiations with Iran, Hezbollah supporter over his nuclear program.
