The leader of Lebanon’s Hezbollah expressed hope today that the new Syrian authorities, which overthrew its ally Bashar al-Assad, will not normalize relations with Israel, the arch-enemy of the pro-Iranian movement. Naim Qassem expressed the desire for the new administration in Syria to “consider Israel an enemy and not normalize its relations”, as he said in his first televised address since the fall of Assad, whom his movement supported militarily during ten and more years of conflict in Syria. Hezbollah lost its supply route through Syria after the ouster of President Bashar al-Assad nearly a week ago following the rebels’ blitzkrieg attack. Qassem did not mention Assad by name in his televised speech and said the organization cannot judge Syria’s new authorities until the situation in the country is stabilized. Source: RES
