Hezbollah says it will continue attacks on Israel if war in Gaza continues

The head of the powerful Lebanese armed group Hezbollah said on Monday (13) that residents of northern Israel will not be able to return home if his government continues its offensive in the Gaza Strip.

Hezbollah has been exchanging attacks with the Israeli army on Lebanon's southern border, in parallel to the war in Gaza. The armed group said it was firing rockets at Israel to support its ally, the Palestinian armed group Hamas, and to dissuade Israel from launching an attack in Lebanon.

In a televised speech on Monday, Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah repeated that his group will continue fighting as long as Israel maintains its offensive in Gaza.

“The connection between the Lebanese front and Gaza is definitive, final and conclusive,” he stated. “No one will be able to separate them.”

The fighting has displaced tens of thousands of people on both sides of the border and raised fears of a wider war between heavily armed adversaries.

Israel has said it wants to ensure northern residents return home, whether through a mediated diplomatic agreement or a military strike against Lebanon. Displaced families in northern Israel hope to return by September 1, for the start of the school academic year.

Nasrallah spoke about the displaced on Friday (10), saying: “if you want to resolve the issue, go to your government and tell it to stop the war in Gaza.”
