High demand for 48-inch OLED TVs has led to an unusual situation

LG Display is looking to expand its production of 48-inch OLED panels in response to increased demand for matching TVs, the source said. Such TVs, in particular, are increasingly being chosen by fans of video games.

High demand for 48-inch OLED TVs has led to an unusual situation

LG Display manufactures panels at a factory in Guangzhou, where two 77-inch and two 48-inch panels can be obtained from each 8.5G glass plate. This year, the manufacturer plans to start producing 48-inch panels at its Paju factory, making eight 48-inch panels on a single substrate. This will allow shipping about 1 million 48-inch panels this year. For comparison: in 2020, 220,000 such panels were produced.

Interestingly, strong demand for 48-inch models has led to an unusual situation where a 55-inch OLED TV can cost less than a 48-inch version of the same model. This is due to the fact that TV manufacturers are offering discounts on 55 “models, but not on 48” ones.
