High interest sacrifices too much low-income population, says Marinho

The Minister of Labor and Employment, Luiz Marinho, said this Thursday (9) that three factors explain a smaller generation of jobs in January 2023.

In the month, 83,297 were created and, in the same period last year, 167,269. According to him, the high interest rates practiced by the Central Bank (BC) penalize the economy and job creation.

In addition, Marinho pointed out that the level of household indebtedness and the high commitment of income, added to the increase in fixed expenses in January, lead companies to reduce hiring in the face of the expectation of a drop in consumption.

Marinho also pointed out that the crisis at Lojas Americanas affects the expectations of entrepreneurs, who stop hiring.

“January is traditionally a strong month. In January 2023, we have a still restrictive monetary policy. The BC has an important task of monitoring the economic process for the recovery of the economy. High interest rates greatly sacrifice the country’s low-income population,” he said.
