A rabbi at a synagogue and a man in his 70s who had traveled to Chicago from Mexico to visit family are two of the six victims of the deadly attack on people participating in or watching the American National Day parade of the 4th of July in Highland Park, a suburb of Chicago.
Nicholas Toledo is the first victim to be identified last night by his family after a gunman with a high-powered rifle from the roof of a shopping mall opened fire on families attending the parade, killing six and injuring more than 36.
The alleged assailant has been identified as 22-year-old Robert (“Bobby”) Krimo III, a resident of the area.
“My grandfather Nicholas Toledo, father of eight and grandfather to many, left us this morning on the 4th of July, a day of family joy turned into a horrible nightmare for all of us,” wrote his granddaughter Shohil Toledo.
“Nicolas was a loving, creative, adventurous and funny person. We his family are devastated, numb,” he noted.
His family has set up a GoFundMe page to raise money to repatriate his body to Mexico. As of this morning, $33,000 had been raised.
Toledo, about 70, had been visiting family for the past month. He spent the last days of his life swimming and fishing with relatives, his family told the media.
Some of his relatives were injured in the attack but are expected to survive, CBS Chicago reported.
Another victim of the attack who was identified was Jackie Sandheim, a rabbi at the Highland Park Synagogue.
North Shore Congregation Israel, located in Illinois, confirmed her death in an email to its members.
“There are no words to express our sadness at Jackie’s passing and our deepest sympathies to her family and loved ones. Jackie’s work, kindness and warmth touched us all – from her lessons at Gates of Learning Kindergarten to guiding countless of us through times of joy and sorrow in our lives, all with enduring devotion,” the statement added.
The synagogue announced that Jackie Sandheim leaves behind her husband and daughter.
The American police have confirmed that they have detained the alleged perpetrator of the attack in Highland Park, as reported by international agencies and relayed by the Athens News Agency.
Hundreds of police officers joined the manhunt to track down the gunman. Authorities released a photo of the young white man with a bony face and various tattoos.
After a short car chase, the suspect was taken into custody.
The young man had a presence on various websites, where he introduced himself as a musician from Chicago under the nickname “Awake the rapper”.
His motives are unknown at this stage.
Yesterday Monday, a holiday in the USA, hundreds of residents, among them many families with children and infants, had taken their places on the sidewalks of Highland Park to watch the traditional parade for the Independence Day.
While marching student bands, gunshots were heard.
According to the first data of the investigation, the young man opened fire from the roof of a shopping mall to which he had climbed by the fire safety ladder.
After opening fire, he fled.
Five people, all adults, were killed on the spot, the sixth died after being taken to a hospital. At least 26 injured people – aged between 8 and 85 – were taken by emergency services and some, including a child, are in a critical condition, a medical img said.
Celebrations were immediately suspended in several nearby towns, where authorities closed beaches and urged citizens to be vigilant.
