Himalayan avalanche traps Indian army team near China

A Himalayan avalanche trapped a patrol team of seven Indian army personnel in northeast China’s state of Arunachal Pradesh on Sunday, who have yet to be rescued, a Defense Ministry official said on Monday.

The team was on duty in the Kameng region high in the Himalayas, which has seen heavy snowfall in recent days, said Lt. Col. Harsh Wardhan Pande, a Defense Ministry spokesman based in the northeast of the country.

“Search and rescue operations are ongoing,” he said in a statement. “Specialized teams were flown in to help with rescue operations.”

After several border stand-offs in recent years, relations have become strained with neighboring China, and India has stepped up patrolling in Arunachal Pradesh in the eastern Himalayas, as well as stepping up road and tunnel construction.

Arunachal borders Tibet.
