Sales of 5G smartphones have finally surpassed those of 4G models this year. In January 2022, 5G phones accounted for about 51% of all devices sold.
According to a Counterpoint Research report, China, North America and Western Europe were the largest regions that contributed to this growth. So far, the highest 5G penetration rate has been in China, where it stands at 84%. This surge was fueled by the introduction of 5G networks by Chinese operators, as well as the release of new models at competitive prices. In North America and Western Europe, 5G penetration rates were 74% and 76%, respectively.

In these two regions, Apple dominated with a market share of 30% in Western Europe and 50% in North America. This followed after the brand launched the iPhone 12 series with 5G support. For now, these regions are expected to see further growth in the popularity of 5G-enabled models. Meanwhile, with affordable chips from MediaTek and Qualcomm supporting faster bandwidth, the market for 5G Android smartphones has also grown. This is especially true in the mid-to-high range segment of $250 to $400.

On the other hand, affordable chips have allowed $150 to $250 Android phones to also support 5G networks. Asia Pacific, Middle East and Latin America are the next regions where 5G is expected to grow in popularity.
