Historic tragedy and deficit of works caused damage in Petrópolis, says Castro

The governor of Rio de Janeiro, Cláudio Castro (PL), said, this Wednesday (16), that the combination of the biggest storm since 1932, when they began to be counted, with a deficit of works, caused the damage in the city of Petropolis.

“What we have to understand is that there is a historical debt from other tragedies they have had. It was rather an exceptionally hard character. It was the heaviest rain since 1932. Combining a historic tragedy with a deficit that actually exists caused all this damage. Let it serve as a lesson so that this time we are different”, declared Castro.

According to the local Civil Defense, at least 78 people died. In six hours on Tuesday (15) 260 millimeters of rain were recorded, causing 189 landslides and 229 occurrences, with about 35 to 50 houses affected, leaving 374 homeless or homeless.

The concepts of homeless and homeless are different. Homeless is one who has lost his home and is in a public shelter. The homeless person had to leave his home – he did not necessarily lose it – and he is not in shelters, but at the home of a relative, friend or acquaintance, for example.

According to the Climatempo forecast, the storms should still reach the Serrana Region in the coming days. The expectation is that it will rain heavily between the middle of Thursday (17) and the afternoon of Friday (18). Specialists say that the volume of rain should be lower than that observed yesterday.
