Historical record for coronavirus mortality in the US

A study by the Federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) found that 2020 saw the highest mortality in US history since records began to be kept, with the pandemic of the new coronavirus contributing to its increase by 15%, or to more than 3 million deaths, the news magazine Politico reported yesterday in its electronic edition.

Citing unnamed sources, the magazine points out that COVID-19 was the third leading cause of death in the country last year, only behind heart disease and cancer.

The CDC will summarize these findings in the forthcoming edition of its Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, always according to Politico.

Their analysis will detail the percentages of Americans by race and ethnicity who died because of the pandemic and the number of deaths by demographic category, according to a post on the magazine’s website.

The CDC and the US Department of Health did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Reuters.

Worldwide, more than 117.6 million people have been infected with SARS-CoV-2, of which more than 2.73 million died from COVID-19, according to the data collected by the agency. The United States has suffered by far the worst of the pandemic, with more than 528,000 deaths and 29 million cases.

However, the CDC points out that infections, hospital admissions and deaths seem to be on a downward trajectory lately.
