Holding Ukrainian flag, Pope Francis condemns ‘Bucha massacre’

Pope Francis on Wednesday condemned “the massacre at Bucha” and raised a Ukrainian flag sent to him from the city where civilian bodies were shot at point blank range and a mass grave was found.

“The recent news of the war in Ukraine, instead of relief and hope, has brought new atrocities, such as the Bucha massacre,” he said at the end of his weekly audience in the Vatican auditorium.

“Increasingly horrendous cruelty, even against defenseless civilians, women and children. They are victims whose innocent blood cries out to the heavens and begs: ‘Stop this war! Let the guns be silent,” Francis said.

The Kremlin said on Tuesday that Western allegations that Russian forces committed war crimes by executing civilians in Bucha were a “monstrous forgery” designed to denigrate the country’s army.

“Yesterday, precisely from Bucha, this flag was brought to me,” he said, unfolding it and raising it to the audience, which erupted into applause.

“It comes from the war, precisely from that martyred city, Bucha,” the pope said, before asking a group of war refugee children who had arrived from Ukraine to approach him.

“These children had to flee to reach safe land. This is the fruit of war. We will not forget them and we will not forget the Ukrainian people”, concludes Francis, before giving each child an Easter egg.
