Holidays in the city, 10 steps to unplug

This summer, as we know, is a summer in its own way and there are not a few Italians who, to avoid the risk of contagion or flight cancellations at the last moment, have decided to spend their holidays at home. For those forced to stay in the city, entering “vacation” mode and enjoying their holidays at home is not easy. One of the biggest difficulties is being able to switch off and stay away from the usual daily habits.

“On vacation, even if you stay in the city, you need to,” suggests the life coach Alessandro Cozzolino, «necessarily do something other than the routine.

Visit and spend time in a different place, change rhythms, maybe enjoy dishes and relate to new people. It is also important to change your mental attitude. To do this, there is no need to pack. The British coined a specific term, staycations – composed of stay (stay) e vacations (holidays) – to indicate holidays in the city and at home. In fact, the real holiday is not (only) a departure from everyday life, but from everyday thoughts. The person we are with (pre) occupations, dreams and emotions travels and is always with us. This is why the first thorn to unplug is that of our inner little voices ».

For those who do not leave, one of the temptations to avoid «is to make comparisons. Those who stay in the city tend to watch those who go or are on vacation. This is enough to arouse in us envy, inferiority complexes and negative emotions. Another equally serious mistake is to believe that others are luckier than us. A certain loneliness in the city during the holidays can help a lot to shed light within us, allowing us to decide what and how to do to change what we don’t like or feel good about today. But unfortunately, and this is the third big mistake: many, too many fear loneliness, do not want and are unable to spend time alone, thus losing important moments of introspection ».

The right attitude to spend peaceful holidays without leaving?
«It is necessary», suggests the life coach Cozzolino, «to preserve the typical curiosity of children. It is necessary to observe with different, new eyes, what perhaps passes under our noses every day but of which we ignore the existence or ignore the essence. We must learn to refrain from judgment, to believe less in appearances and to think more effectively about substance. You have to make friends with boredom, loneliness, emptiness and silence. That’s where the answers we seek to create a better life are found. “

Because even boredom can be an asset on vacation. “Without the frenetic pace we are all used to, the calm of an uninhabited city can help us get closer to the only person who has always and forever lived with us: ourselves”.
