Holy Oil in Jerusalem Gets Ready for Charles III’s Coronation; understandThe holy oil that will be used to anoint King Charles at his coronation, scheduled for May, was consecrated in Jerusalem. The announcement came this Friday from Buckingham Palace, and reflects the British monarch’s ties to the Holy Land.

His Beatitude Theophilos III, Greek Orthodox Patriarch of Jerusalem, and the Anglican Archbishop of the city, Hosam Naoum, consecrated the Chrism oil in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, the palace announced.

The oil will be used to anoint Charles when he and his wife, Camilla, are crowned at Westminster Abbey in London on May 6, in what is considered the holiest part of the solemn ceremony.

Traditionally, oil is poured from an ampoule onto the Coronation Spoon and then the sovereign is anointed on his hands, chest and head.

The newly consecrated oil was made with olives harvested from two olive groves on the Mount of Olives, the Monastery of the Ascension and the Monastery of Mary Magdalene, where Charles’ grandmother, Princess Alice of Greece, was buried.

“It demonstrates the deep historical connection between the coronation, the Bible and the Holy Land,” said Welby, spiritual head of the Church of England. “From ancient kings to the present day, monarchs have been anointed with oil from this holy place.”
